Cyberpunk Explosion

-VFX- Cyberpunk Explosion
I was inspired by the role-playing game Cyberpunk Red and the game Cyberpunk 2077, both of which I'm playing at the moment. I got really nice references from ArtStation to adapt the realistic cyberpunk theme to my stylised art style. I tried to follow the animation principles of anticipation, climax and dissipation to improve my timing skills. This work made me learn how to use custom post-processing materials in Unreal and how to use vertex position offset to get different sensations. Every model (which was easy because the effect is quite geometric) and every texture was done by me in Blender and Photoshop. I applied screen shake and an impact frame using the sequencer to change the material values at runtime. Hope you like it!

The material used in the explosion sphere. It uses an squared texture panned through the time and a sine wave to offset the vertex positions using their vertex normal as the main axis.

The post-processing material developed to achieve the low-resolution old effect. The Glitch effect shifts the green and blue channels using a sine function to simulate flickering. The material also inverts colours using a parameter material collection.
